JARROW VOICES
A Film by Gary Wilkinson and Tom Kelly
Voices we need to hear: William Jobling and the Jarrow Crusade.
‘Jarrow Voices’ captures two iconic events associated with Jarrow: the gibbeting of William Jobling in 1832, the last man gibbeted in the north and over one hundred years later, in 1936, the Jarrow Crusade. It also includes the contribution to the crusade of Ellen Wilkinson, the town’s fiery MP from 1935 until her sudden death in 1947.
Those interviewed include Matt Perry, writer of the definitive book on the march, ‘The Jarrow Crusade: Protest and Legend’; Jarrow man Con Shiels reading the letters sent to him by his father while he was on the Crusade and Davey Hopper NUM North East Area Secretary.
Also included is the Jarrow Mural, which has been created on panels surrounding the building of the new Tyne Tunnel at Jarrow. Work on the mural began in May 2009 and was funded by Find Your Talent at the Customs House.
‘Jarrow Voices’ was filmed throughout the summer and autumn of 2009.
Running Time: 15 minutes
