Sean O’Brien and Roy Fisher: Urban Poetry at Live Theatre
Sunday 20th April, 8pm
£7/£5 conc.
Live Poetry is a new series of poetry events. One Sunday each month we will bring the best poets from the UK – and around the world – to Live Theatre in Newcastle. Following last month’s sell-out launch event with Simon Armitage, we are delighted to welcome two urban visionaries: Sean O’Brien and Roy Fisher.
Sean O’Brien was recently described in The Times as ‘poetry’s man of the moment’ and it’s easy to see why: in 2007 he received the Northern Rock Foundation Writer’s Award, and his latest book, The Drowned Book (Picador, 2007), was awarded both the Forward Prize for Best Collection and the T.S. Eliot Prize. O’Brien’s poetry is characterised by its political engagement, its formal achievement, and its dry wit. Originally from Hull, he has lived and worked in Newcastle for several years.
Roy Fisher is an enormously influential figure in contemporary poetry, whose work bridges the divide between so-called ‘avant-garde’ and ‘mainstream’ poetries. He combines meditations on his native landscapes – in particular the city of Birmingham – with his keen interest in American poetry and jazz music. Like Sean O’Brien, Fisher presents us with a vision of England as it has moved from an industrial to a post-industrial country. He will be reading from The Long and the Short of It: Poems 1955 – 2005 (Bloodaxe, 2005).
