ROCK AND ROLL THEATRE
It’s another summer of firsts and continued successes for north east playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood.
The duo, who are based on Tyneside, will have their hit plays Dirty Dusting, Waiting For Gateaux and Son of Samurai performed at venues as diverse as the Fortune Theatre in Dunedin, New Zealand, the Blackpool Grand Theatre and the Latitude Festival in Suffolk.
Son of Samurai will be the first play from the north east to be represented at the prestigious Latitude Festival theatre arena in July. Headlining bands at the Latitude include Franz Ferdinand and Blondie.
“Samurai” is about a young Geordie shoe shop salesman who discovers he’s a descendant of a famous Samurai warrior. Like Dirty Dusting and Waiting For Gateaux, it premiered at the Customs House in South Shields where it played for a month last September, gaining widespread critical acclaim.
Dirty Dusting, which is an outrageous comedy about three female pensioners who get made redundant from their cleaning jobs and set up a telephone sex line, travels Down Under for four weeks in July.
The outrageous comedy, which has already played to sell–out audiences throughout the UK and Ireland, embarks on its first journey to New Zealand and it is being performed by a cast comprising New Zealanders and Australians.
Waiting For Gateaux, another outrageous comedy, about the worst slimming club in the world will play the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon, the Grand Theatre in Blackpool and Winchester Theatre Royal in June and July.
“Gateaux” was very well received in New Zealand when it toured for a month two years ago and last September sold nearly 4,000 seats at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal for only four performances.
Trevor Wood said: “We are absolutely delighted. Our producers are taking our work to new pastures and what it proves beyond any doubt is that north east humour can travel.”
