NEWCASTLE THEATRE ROYAL HAT-TRICK
North east playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood are celebrating a hat-trick after it has been announced they will have a third play performed at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal.
The duo, whose hits Dirty Dusting and Waiting For Gateaux have played to capacity audiences in the main 1200-seat main hall of the region’s number one theatre, will have Son of Samurai performed in the venue’s new intimate 76-seat learning space in September.
Only 228 tickets in total are available for the three-show Theatre Royal run and theatre bosses are urging people to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
Trevor Wood explained: “Samurai” is a 60-minute comedy about a young Geordie shoe shop salesman from Byker who discovers he’s a descendant of a famous Samurai warrior.
“It is a cultural clash, a bit like Crocodile Dundee meets Lost In Translation, and even involves some audience participation. Like Dirty Dusting and Waiting For Gateaux it is great fun.”
Son of Samurai is at the Theatre Royal from Thursday, September 25, to Saturday 27.
It will also be performed at the Customs House, South Shields, from Thursday, September 4 to Saturday 6, and the Stockton Arc from Thursday, September 18 to 20.
Son of Samurai is being produced by South Shields-based Gareth Hunter, 28, of Ion Productions and will be performed at the prestigious Latitude Festival in Suffolk in July before its north east run.
The Latitude is a rock festival that also has a theatre tent and Samurai will share the billing with work from the likes of the RSC and Royal Court.
Like Dirty Dusting and Waiting For Gateaux, Son of Samurai premiered at the Customs House, where it played for a month last summer and garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Tickets cost from £6 and are available from all three venues now. Contact the Theatre Royal box office on 08448 11 21 21; the Customs House on 0191 454 1234; and the Stockton Arc 01642 525199.
