round is a knockout round.

Rules.

1. The Lyrical Slam takes place at the Cumberland Arms in Byker on Thursday March 19th starting at 8.00 prompt.

2. A cash prize of £40.00 will be awarded to the winner as well as the prestigious title of Lyrical Slam Champion 2009.

3. The slam is only open to all comers. A maximum of 16 performers will take part and in the event of more than sixteen applying the organisers will decide who will take part. Their decision is final and cannot be challenged in the High Court or the European Court of Human Rights.

4. In each round each performer will perform one song lyric for no longer than 3 minutes, including any intro. The clock starts when you start speaking and one point will be deducted for every ten seconds you go over the time.

5. The order of performing will be determined before the slam starts. Names will be drawn from a hat by random members of the audience.

6. Each round will be between two poets and one will be eliminated, the other will go through to the next round. 16 will be reduced to 8, then to 4 and then to 2 to decide the winner. Therefore you will need four song lyrics to take part.

7. The audience will be handed score cards and they vote for contestant 1 or contestant 2 to eliminate one of them.

8. No props please although garish Hawaiian shirts are allowed.

9. All performers must be at the venue to register by 7.30.

10. In the case of any dispute the decision of the organisers will be final even if it seems unfair and unjust.
