This stunning portrait of Allan Ginsberg’s legendary poem Howl boasts a compelling performance from127 Hours star James Franco as Ginsberg. Howl is an utter original – a film which mixes the poem itself (writ on screen using beautifully animated segments) with dramatised courtroom drama (using excerpts from the obscenity trial which accompanied the poem’s release), but it’s Franco’s performance as Ginsberg which makes this a must see.

Narrating the story of Howl’s creation, his life and the part he played in the Beat Generation of poets, he effortlessly knits the film together. Boasting a starry cast around him featuring David Strathairn and Jon Hamm, Howl is a riveting look into the creation of a legendary and provocative masterpiece and the birth of a counterculture.
