Once Upon a Time in the North is the story of local music in South Tyneside
from the 1960’s to the 80’s. Musicians tell their stories of the highs and lows
of being involved in the local music scene. The film uses archive material,

‘Little Ireland’ looks at the influx of the Irish into Jarrow from the middle of
the nineteenth century, their impact on the town and how they helped
shape the community. Filmed in Jarrow at the end of 2008, the film for
the first time captures what it meant to be Irish in Jarrow.

The film captures two iconic events associated with Jarrow:
the gibbeting of William Jobling in 1832, the last man gibbeted in the North,
and over one hundred years later, in 1936, the Jarrow Crusade. It also
includes the contribution to the Crusade of Ellen Wilkinson, the town’s
fiery M.P. ‘Jarrow Voices’ was written and narrated by Tom Kelly.
Premiered on 12th December 2009 at the International Human Rights Day
at Newcastle City Library.
